Two young Ghanaians win gold at 2025 Abacus Mental Math Olympiad

Two young talents from Shenmo Abacus Ghana have brought pride to the nation in a remarkable display of mental math prowess. Ridwan Mahmoud Jajah and Ummu Sulaim Abass, both representing Al-Hikmah Islamic Montessori School, clinched first and third place, respectively, in the Level 1 category of the 2nd Abacus Mental Math Olympiad held on 18 October, in Kigali, Rwanda. The event, which featured over 300 contestants from 30 African countries, showcased the power of the ancient abacus—a device made of beads used for arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction. Demonstrating exceptional skill and focus, the Ghanaian champions each received two gold medals and two trophies, affirming their mastery in mental calculations. The Ghanaian team was led by Mr. Musa Frimpong, Principal of Shenmo Ghana, and Mr. Joseph Gyebi, Abacus Instructor. The delegation expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their support, noting that the achievement reflects the effectiveness of Shenmo Ghana’s Abacus education program in nurturing young mathematical minds. The event was graced by dignitaries, including President Li Mianjun, Founder of Shenmo Education International (China); Dr. Lily Cheng, International Consultant for Shenmo Education and Professor at San Diego State University, USA; as well as over 30 Shenmo Principals from China, Singapore, the USA, and across Africa. More than 500 parents attended, underscoring the growing significance of abacus-based learning on the continent.
