Two-year extension for commissioning projects under solar PLI scheme

The government has allowed up to two years’ extension for commissioning projects under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for solar equipment manufacturing, renewable energy secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi told ET.The move, approved by the empowered group of secretaries headed by cabinet secretary TV Somanathan, follows industry requests, citing delays in procuring capital goods. Many of those who had committed to ingot-wafers and polysilicon manufacturing could not source their capital goods “because of a variety of reasons,” Sarangi said. “So, they were seeking an extension.” The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) had moved a proposal to the panel in this regard. The additional time is expected to help manufacturers kickstart their production in segments such as wafer-ingot and polysilicon.India’s current module manufacturing capacity stands at over 100 GW, while cell capacity is around 27 GW and ingot-wafer capacity is at 2 GW.According to CareEdge Ratings, India’s solar module and cell capacity are expected to touch 200 GW and 100 GW, respectively, by FY28, outpacing the annual domestic module demand of 50 GW over the next three years.Live EventsBoosting solar energy infraThe first tranche of the National Programme on High Efficiency Solar PV Modules – the PLI scheme for the solar sector – targeted a total capacity of 8,737 MW.Reliance New Energy, Shirdi Sai Electricals and Adani Infrastructure were the successful bidders. The deadline to commission projects was December 2024, and the cumulative incentive to be given is ₹4,455 crore. In the second tranche, the capacity awarded was 39,600 MW in three baskets with combinations of modules, cells, ingot-wafers and polysilicon. Its total allocation is ₹13,938 crore. Among the companies allocated capacity in this tranche were Waaree Energies, Avaada Ventures, ReNewSolar, JSW Renewable, and Reliance New Solar Energy. The commissioning date for cells-modules was June 2025, while that for wafer-cells-modules was December 2025, and for polysilicon-wafer-cells-modules it was March 2026. The end date of the scheme will remain the same as before, with tranche-I ending in FY30 and tranche-II ending in FY32.India had unveiled production-linked incentives for 14 sectors to boost local manufacturing during the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the Aatmanirbhar package. As many as 806 applications have been approved under these schemes till June end. The government has so far disbursed ₹21,534 crore in incentives across 12 sectors under various PLI schemes including IT hardware, bulk drugs, telecom and networking products, white goods and specialty steel.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
