Two workers, including Sri Lankan woman, killed in fireworks accident near Alangulam

A Sri Lankan national B. Gowri, 50, was charred to death and five other workers were injured in a fire at a fireworks unit named Divya Pyrotechnics, at Gangarseval under Alangulam police station limits in Virudhunagar on Wednesday (September 17, 2025).

According to the police, Gowri was a resident of the Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp at Thulukkankurichi.

Among the injured, the condition of S. Kalimuthu, 53, is said to be critical with 100% burns, and K. Meghala, 21, has suffered 40% burns.

Other persons who were injured in the accident were identified as V. Sivaranjani, 39, Vijayalakshmi, 60, and K. Mariammal, 40.

All the injured have been admitted to a government hospital in Sivakasi. Initial reports say that friction while handling chemicals to make fireworks goods led to the accident.

The Alangulam police are investigating the incident.
