Two of the six persons in possession of 1,195 boxes of Tramadol have each been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour by the Nalerigu Circuit Court.
Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit crime and possession of restricted drugs without lawful authority.
They were convicted on their own plea.
The court, presided over by Francis Asobayire, also fined each of the two convicts 5,000 penalty units: equivalent to GH¢60,000.00.
In default of payment of the fine, they would serve an additional 10 years’ imprisonment, each.
The two have been taken to the Gambaga local prison to begin their sentences.
The other four; Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik were discharged for want of prosecution as further investigation disclosed that they were not linked to the crime.
It would be recalled that the police, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission in the North East Region, arrested the six persons at Gbintiri near Nalerigu on September 18, 2025, for possessing 1,195 boxes of tramadol hydrochloride 120mg, popularly called “Red”, a restricted drug.
They were arrested after two trucks with registration numbers GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14 were intercepted.
The vehicles had been loaded from Sankase in the Republic of Togo and were en route to Gbintri.
On Friday, September 19, the six accused persons were arraigned at the Nalerigu Circuit Court and remanded to reappear on Friday, September 26.
Investigations disclosed that 100 boxes of the Tramadol were found in the possession of Mumuni Iddrisu and Alhassan Braimah.
The two were also found to have concealed over 4,500 packs of the restricted drug in 25 five-litre yellow gallons.
The police have commended the people of the North East Region, especially the leadership of the Nalerigu Youth Association, for their support and collaboration in the successful arrest and prosecution of the convicts.
“We would also like to caution all persons engaged in the illicit drug business in the Region to put a stop to the practice,” the police said in a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency.
“Such individuals or group of persons would be made to face the law when caught,” it said.
