Two held with smuggled foreign cigarettes worth ₹12 lakh

The Delhi police have arrested two men for allegedly supplying ₹12 lakh worth of smuggled foreign cigarettes lacking mandatory health warnings, an officer said on Saturday. Police seized 66,400 cigarettes of international brands from Parveen Sehgal, 37, of Panipat, Haryana, and Mukesh Khatreja, 48, of Delhi. On Saturday, police received a tip about a large consignment of banned cigarettes to be delivered near Palam flyover in Prahladpur. An officer said that, acting on the tip-off, police laid a trap and apprehended both accused with four bags of smuggled cigarette packets. The officer said the packets did not carry the statutory health warnings mandated under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), rendering them illegal for sale or distribution in India. During interrogation, police found that the two accused were involved in smuggling cigarettes from Cambodia and supplying them to local markets in Delhi and nearby areas.
