Brian Barry-Murphy has been keen to stress he won’t become “The Tinkerman”, but the Cardiff City boss has already admitted changes will be made from the 1-1 draw with Stockport County at the weekend . With the Bluebirds set to travel to Exeter City in the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night, it looks an ideal moment to rotate, reward some patient squad members and hand opportunities to a clutch of youngsters and new signings. Here’s the team Barry-Murphy should go with — and why… GK: Matt Turner Nathan Trott has been sensational as Cardiff’s new No.1, but this competition offers the perfect stage for the Welshman to get more minutes under his belt. He deserves another shot after impressing in his outings to date. RB: Perry Ng The full-back looked a touch rusty at Stockport after having to wait patiently for his first league start this term. A quality player who simply needs time on the pitch to sharpen up again. Has a huge role to play for City — in all competitions — this season. CB: Gabriel Osho (debut) A summer arrival from Auxerre, Osho has so far only warmed the bench. This is an ideal chance to hand him his debut, ease him into the system and allow him to strike up chemistry with his defensive partners. CB: Calum Chambers The experienced centre-half perhaps didn’t enjoy his best outing during a tough battle at Edgeley Park, but he is the right man to steady the defence alongside Osho. Feels like the right choice for this one. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community LB: Luey Giles Joel Bagan has been heavily relied upon so far. Giles is the natural understudy and needs minutes to prevent Bagan from being run into the ground. Barry-Murphy did, however, last week allude to Ronan Kpakio potentially swapping sides, so he may use this game to test that theory out. CDM: Dakarai Mafico The teenager caught the eye last time out in the Carabao Cup , showing discipline and bite in midfield. An exciting youngster, who is still just 18, has earned another chance to impress. CM: David Turnbull Still working his way back to full fitness after injury, Turnbull could use this fixture as a springboard. His range of passing should allow Cardiff to dictate play against Exeter. CAM: Omari Kellyman (debut) If fit, the Chelsea loanee should be involved. He travelled to Stockport as a non-playing reserve, but Barry-Murphy has said he is fit, so maybe he was saving him for this one for his first outing. Even a 45-minute cameo would give him valuable exposure and provide the head coach with a first real look at him in action. RW: Tanatswa Nyakuhwa The winger shone for Wales U21s during the international break – even if they did succumb to a chastening defeat against Denmark. This is his chance to push himself firmly into first-team contention. Another, like Mafico, who really caught the eye during Cardiff’s win over Cheltenham Town in the last round of the Carabao Cup. Powerful and pacey, he has a chance to prove his worth once more against the Grecians. ST: Callum Robinson Has played second fiddle to Yousef Salech so far, but has been knocking on the door. Exeter feels like the perfect time to give him a starting berth. He has a huge role to play this season and he should relish leading the line in this attacking-looking team. The pacey forward has the ability to stretch defences and, if he takes his opportunity here, could hand his manager a selection headache before Bradford’s visit on Saturday. Might Barry-Murphy want to see him through the middle, though? Potentially. This XI blends experience with opportunity: debuts for Osho and Kellyman, a chance for Nyakuhwa to showcase his U21 form and valuable minutes for players like Turnbull, Robinson and Davies. The likes of 16-year-old Robert Tankiewicz has been training with the first team of late , but is that too left-field a shout right now? Potentially one for the bench? Certainly one to keep an eye on. Barry-Murphy said he won’t make changes “for the sake of it” — but this feels like smart rotation with a clear purpose. — *Follow all of our social channels to ensure you stay up to date with the latest Bluebirds news.
