THE twin brother of double Olympic gold medalist Fintan McCarthy said he was “hugely delighted” after winning his first ever medal at the World Rowing Championships. Jake McCarthy, 28, claimed bronze in the men’s lightweight singles in Shanghai on Saturday. It represented vindication for the Irishman, who came ever so close to a medal at the European Championships only to finish fourth. And speaking afterwards, he revealed his delight at finally getting on the podium on the big stage. He said: “It’s my first medal on the world stage, so I’m hugely delighted. “It was a tough one, it was kind of different to other regattas in that it was more trying to handle the heat as well as everything else. “Luckily I had such a good support staff this year that helped me out giving me all the tips. “I probably pestered them a lot with all the questions, but luckily was able to get a medal in the end.” It follows brother Fintan also winning a medal on Friday. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and Philip Doyle were all smiles after bagging bronze in Shanghai. The Olympic medal-winning pair came home in third spot in the men’s double sculls at the World Rowing Championships. Poland’s duo of Miroslaw Zietarski and Mateusz Biskup took the gold but the Irish double act were well in the hunt for silver before being overtaken by Serbia’s Martin Mackovic and Nikolaj Pimenov. Two-time Olympic lightweight champion McCarthy claimed his first medal at heavyweight level. And new partner Doyle said afterwards: “I think every race we go we’re learning. “We have very different styles so we’re trying to mesh that in. “Every time we go out we feel better — the legs feel better, the boat feels better, everything.” Fiona Murtagh won her semi-final to book her place in tomorrow’s women’s single sculls A final. Elsewhere, the women’s double sculls pair of Mags Cremen and Zoe Hyde took first place in the B final. The women’s four of Imogen Magner, Aisling Hayes, Emma Waters and Natalie Long were in third in their B final. And Konan Pazzaia was second in the men’s single sculls C final.
