It took a little less than a half, but Tulane’s Green Wave finally overwhelmed Tulsa’s wave of momentum from beating Oklahoma State.
Tulane looked every bit the American Conference favorite, pulling away from the Hurricane 31-14 on a steamy Saturday afternoon at Chapman Stadium.
TU falls to 2-3 (0-2 in the American) and finishes its first-half schedule gauntlet at Memphis next Saturday.
Tulane’s defense managed six sacks, 12 tackles for loss and an interception, manhandling a TU offensive line that had outplayed Oklahoma State eight days ago.
The Hurricane tried various degrees of trickery in the first half — a reverse pass, a defensive lineman at running back and a surprise onside kick — to keep things close.
But Tulane running back Javin Gordon was too much, rushing for his first three touchdowns of the season and 78 yards. Quarterback Jake Retzlaff contributed 242 yards passing and 29 yards rushing before taking a seat for the game’s last 11 minutes.
