FOUR DOWNS
1. Revel in the prime time spotlight.
TU plays the first of at least three nationally televised games Friday when it takes on Oklahoma State. And for the first 30 minutes, the Hurricane and Cowboys will be the only FBS game going. If TU repeats its first-quarter performance against Navy, perhaps the Hurricane can prevent casual viewers from turning the channel to Iowa at Rutgers. There would be no better way to reinvigorate Tre Lamb’s first season than with an upset win in front of what will likely be the most TV viewers to watch a TU game this season.
2. Don’t get fooled by 69-3.
One indicator of how bad Oklahoma State’s 69-3 loss to Oregon was — even with the Cowboys having a week off, even with TU uncertain about its starting quarterback and playing on short rest, the Hurricane is less of an underdog on the road in Stillwater (11.5 points) than it was at home against Navy (13.5). The Cowboys are still a prideful Big 12 team that’s won 10 straight games in the series and are 44 slots ahead of New Mexico State in ESPN’s power rankings. Any result is possible, but a TU win would still be a significant upset.
3. Find a way to get the ball deep.
Over three games, TU is 4-of-17 throwing the ball 20 yards or farther down the field. The Hurricane is one of only 15 teams in all of FBS to not have a pass completion of 40 or more yards. Backup quarterback Baylor Hayes certainly missed his fair share of chances to make big plays against Navy. And the one-game disciplinary suspension of receiver Micah Tease certainly didn’t help. But if TU doesn’t find a downfield passing game soon, it will get increasingly harder for the Hurricane to move the ball.
4. Come out fast on defense.
Against a team coming off one its worst losses in school history and perhaps looking for a reason to pack things in for the season, a start like the one TU’s defense had against Navy would go a long to way laying the groundwork for an upset. The Hurricane turned the Midshipmen over on their first three series, including two interceptions by Elijah Green. OSU has generated one touchdown in the six quarters since Hauss Hejny’s injury, and Zane Flores threw back-to-back pick 6s in the second half at Oregon.
