TUC Urges Government to Pay Ghana Railways Workers’ Salary Arrears

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana has expressed deep concern over the non-payment of salaries to workers of the Ghana Railways Company Limited for 12 months. In a press conference held today, Joshua Ansah, TUC Secretary-General, urged the government to intervene and settle the salary arrears to avert an impending strike.
The Situation
The Ghana Railways Company Limited, a company wholly owned by the Government of Ghana, has been struggling due to deteriorating infrastructure, which has crippled its haulage business. Despite the critical nature of the railway sector for national development, the government has withdrawn its support to the company.
TUC’s Demands
The TUC has been engaging with the government at the highest level to address the issue. However, the union has grown tired of assurances and is now demanding decisive action to pay the workers’ salary arrears. The Ghana Railway Workers Union has issued a strike notice to commence on September 30, 2025, if the issue is not resolved.
“We need to address the pressing problem of workers not being paid for a whole year. Life has become difficult and impossible for the workers. And we are demanding that Government act decisively and urgently to get the workers paid,” Joshua Ansah stated.
Caution to Ministry of Transport and Ghana Railway Development Authority
The TUC also cautioned the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Development Authority against attempts to run the trains without the operator, the Ghana Railway Company Limited. “We will resist any attempt to sideline the Ghana Railways Company Limited,” Ansah emphasized.
Call to Action
The TUC is urging the government to prioritize investments in the railway sector and settle the salary arrears of the workers. The union believes that the railway sector is critical for national development and should be supported to ensure its sustainability.
As the strike deadline approaches, the TUC hopes that the government will take immediate action to address the workers’ grievances and prevent a disruption in the railway services.
