But in the world according to President Donald Trump, no, you don't. In a Fox News appearance, Trump, while discussing a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, went off on a tangent about magnets. He said, "Nobody knows what a magnet is." Acyn / Fox News / Via x.com He went on to say, "If you don’t have a magnet, you don’t have a car. You don’t make a computer, you don’t make, er, televisions and radios and all the other things—you don’t make anything. It’s a 30-year effort to monopolize a very important thing. Now, in two years, we’ll have magnets, all the magnets we want, because of tariffs. Listen, I called, I said you’re going to play the magnet, we’re going to play the tariff on you." Incredibly, this is not the first time this president has demonstrated that he doesn't understand magnets. At a 2024 campaign event, a clip went viral after he falsely claimed that dropping a glass of water on a magnet would be "the end of the magnets." And more recently, he ranted about this topic again while speaking to the US Navy. Some are pointing out that the M in MRI quite literally stands for magnetic. Trump had an MRI scan for a still-unspecified reason just last month. And grade school teachers everywhere are bravely chiming in to say that they know what magnets are and so do their 5th graders. You know who else knows what magnets are? Scientists, like the hundreds who were fired by the Trump administration earlier this year.
