Trump repeated his claim he helped end eight conflicts since his second term started in January during his meeting with Asian leaders, where he cosigned a peace accord between the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand. Pakistan and Afghanistan have had recent border clashes but agreed a second ceasefire last week during talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey. While the US president – who has coveted the Nobel Peace Prize – certainly contributed to brokering agreements between long-standing foes, his role in securing ceasefires in some of the other conflicts he has boasted about ending has been disputed by some of the countries involved. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in September, Trump said he had “ended seven wars, and in all cases, they were raging, with countless thousands of people being killed. This includes Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Congo and Rwanda — a vicious, violent war that was — Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan.” He has since helped secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, bringing the tally to eight, however he has not made progress on ending the war in between Russia and Ukraine – which he once said he would end in a day.
