TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump praised Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for his role in facilitating peace between Gaza and Israel during the 47th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia, on Sunday, October 26, 2025.Trump hailed the collective efforts of the 59 nations involved in the Gaza peace talks before highlighting Indonesia’s role.“We saved millions of lives. It also includes the end of the war in Gaza. We've signed a very strong agreement. We have 59 countries involved. We have numerous of them right here at this table, like, as an example, Indonesia, my new friend. Thank you very much for helping,“ said Trump, as quoted from a video shared by the Indonesian Presidential Media Team.Turning his attention to Indonesia, he added, “I want to thank Malaysia, Brunei, as well as my friend, President Prabowo of Indonesia, for their incredible support of these efforts to secure the New Day for the Middle East. It really is a new day. There's never been a period of time like this. The Middle East will have peace after 3,000 years. This is a very strong peace,” as he glanced toward Prabowo during his address.Trump also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with Southeast Asian nations, particularly in trade, security, technology, and energy.He expressed Washington’s desire to expand cooperation with ASEAN countries in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and renewable energy.“My message to the nations of Southeast Asia is that the United States is with you 100 percent, and we intend to be a strong partner and friend for many generations to come,” Trump said.The speech was delivered before ASEAN heads of state and government, including President Prabowo, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and several other regional leaders.This was not the first time Trump commended Prabowo’s role in Middle East diplomacy. Earlier, during the Gaza Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, October 13, 2025, Trump had also lauded Prabowo as “an extraordinary man.”“Thank you very much. Joining us is President Prabowo, an extraordinary man from Indonesia,” Trump said, turning toward Prabowo, as quoted from the Presidential Media Team’s official statement on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.Prabowo then approached Trump at the podium, where the two leaders shook hands. “Mr. President, great job,” Trump said as they exchanged greetings.Earlier in the summit, Trump signed a Gaza ceasefire agreement, witnessed by Prabowo and other world leaders.
