Donald Trump has claimed Jimmy Kimmel was axed because he has “no talent.” During today’s press conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a journalist had enquired about the suspension of the well-known late-night television presenter. Shifting from his earlier question about the Israel-Palestine conflict, the reporter asked: “On a separate issue, free speech. Your vice president Vance said that free speech is under attack in the UK. Do you agree with him?” Briefing Starmer on recent events, he explained: “We saw the dismissal of a very well known chat show host in American last night, Mr Kimmel,” before asking: “Is free speech more under attack in Britain or America?” Trump was swift to respond: “Well, Jimmy Kimmel was fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else,” reports the Mirror US . He went on to say: “He said a horrible thing about a great gentleman named Charlie Kirk.” The president continued his attack on the presenter, declaring: “Jimmy Kimmel is not a talented person. He had very bad ratings. They should have fired him a long time ago. “You can call that free speech or not, he was fired for lack of talent,” he concluded. The Prime Minister then intervened to limit any diplomatic fallout. He made clear: “Everybody believes in free speech and democracy.” Starmer highlighted how the assassination of the conservative activist “sent shock waves through the world”. “We need no reminding of the importance of free speech in this country,” Starmer added. Kimmel’s controversial remarks were delivered during one of his recent monologues on the late-night programme. He said: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” He proceeded to slam the president’s response to news of Kirk’s tragic death. Following the programme’s broadcast, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be axed “indefinitely.” The President of Nexstar Media issued a statement, which said: “Mr Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located.”
