The White House on Tuesday declined to clarify why President Donald Trump underwent an MRI during his most recent visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was repeatedly asked about the October magnetic resonance imaging scan but offered little detail. "I'll check back on that," she said, referring reporters to a medical summary issued by Trump's physician following the three-hour visit. The report stated that the 79-year-old president was in "exceptional health, exhibiting strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological and physical performance." "This was a follow-up appointment, and we provided a detailed readout of the physical," Leavitt said. "I'm happy to give it to you again, and I can inquire further." Trump himself revealed last week that he had undergone the MRI early last month, raising questions about the purpose of the scan. The October visit marked his second medical examination this year, following a full physical in April. It is unusual for a sitting president to make two such hospital visits within a single year. "I got an MRI. It was perfect," Trump had told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan. "I gave you the full results. We had an MRI, and the machine, you know, the whole thing — and it was perfect." He declined to say why he had undergone the scan, adding, "Ask the doctors." The President insisted that the White House had released a "very conclusive" summary of his exam. "Nobody has ever given you reports like I gave you," he said. "And if I didn't think it was going to be good, either, I would let you know, negatively. I wouldn't run. I'd do something. But the doctor said some of the best reports for the age, some of the best reports they've ever seen." The White House previously disclosed that Trump was examined in July for swelling in his legs and was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency — a condition in which vein valves do not function properly, allowing blood to pool. Trump has also been observed with bruising on his right hand, which aides say he has attempted to conceal with makeup.
