US President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, over her recent remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week in Utah. “I think she’s a disgraceful person. A loser,” Trump said when asked if Omar should be removed from her congressional committees. “It’s amazing the way people vote… It’s hard to believe. But I think she’s a disgusting person.” His comments came as Representative Buddy Carter, Republican of Georgia, introduced a resolution to strip Omar of her assignments on the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, where she serves as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections. The move is part of the growing political fallout from Kirk’s killing during a college event in Utah. Republicans have accused some Democrats of minimizing his death or disparaging his legacy, while Democrats have countered that their comments have been taken out of context. She recalled that Kirk had “downplayed slavery and what Black people have gone through in this country by saying Juneteenth shouldn’t exist.” “There are a lot of people who are out there talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” she said. “There is nothing more effed up, you know, like, than to completely pretend that, you know, his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so.” While she expressed sympathy for Kirk’s family, Omar also pushed back against Republican attacks. “Like, I have empathy for his kids and his wife and what they’re going through,” she said in the interview. Amid the backlash, she wrote on X that while she had “disagreed with Charlie Kirk vehemently about his rhetoric,” her “heart breaks for his wife and children.” She added: “I don’t wish violence on anyone. My faith teaches me the power of peace, empathy, and compassion. Right-wing accounts trying to spin a false story when I condemned his murder multiple times is fitting for their agenda to villainize the left to hide from the fact that Donald Trump gins up hate on a daily basis.” Carter, who is running for the US Senate and serves on the House Budget Committee alongside Omar, argued she had disqualified herself from serving on congressional panels. “Disparaging Charlie Kirk’s legacy, a God-fearing, honorable man, for boldly sharing his conservative beliefs is disgusting,” he said in a statement to Fox News. “The radical left has normalized meeting free speech with violence, and it must stop. No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee.” He added: “Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians.” Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from US News and around the World.
