President Donald Trump is set to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday at the White House. Just last week, to discuss the Ukraine war. At the meeting, Trump told Zelenskyy that he was not planning on giving Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles, prompting Rutte to travel to Washington. Trump also spoke with on the phone last Thursday, with both presidents planning to meet at a second summit in Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov talked on Monday, but could not agree on matters regarding the summit. The White House confirmed on Tuesday that the summit was no longer happening as of now. Rutte has said that he initiated this meeting after Trump’s success in the Middle East, with Rutte saying that he texted the president “We said, ‘Hey, let’s have a meeting in Washington to discuss how we can now deliver his vision of peace in Ukraine.’” Rutte will be discussing NATO’s support for Ukraine and how the White House can assist in reaching a ceasefire deal with Russia. When speaking on Capitol Hill, Rutte said that Trump is “the only one who can get this done,” with his visit to Washington focusing on working with Trump to promote his “vision on bringing this war to a durable and lasting end.” Trump and Rutte’s meeting comes amid a large-scale Russian drone attack in Ukraine, killing at least six people. Authorities said that at least 18 people were injured in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital. The attack targeted , with Russia trying to cripple Ukraine’s power grid. Ukraine has been fighting back, with the army general staff saying that they were able to strike a Russian chemical plant with British-made missiles. The plant produced gunpowder, explosives, and ammunition, an important aspect of the Russian military.
