Here is a look at how local major and minor league players are performing this season. Stats through Sunday:
MLB
RF Mike Trout (Millville), 34, is playing in his 15th season for the Los Angeles Angels. On Saturday, he hit the 400th homer of his career, a 485-foot moonshot at Coors Field in Denver. The lucky fan who caught the milestone homer returned it to Trout in exchanged for three signed bats, two signed baseballs and the opportunity to have a catch with the superstar. … Through 125 games this season, he was hitting .229 (101 for 441) with 14 doubles, a triple, 22 homers, 68 runs and 59 RBIs. … The Angels entered Monday 70-86 and in last place in the AL West. They will begin a three-game series at home Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals followed by a three-game home series against the Houston Astros.
Trout is a three-time American League MVP and the 2012 AL Rookie of the Year. … He’s a lifetime .294 hitter with 400 homers and 1,013 RBIs in 1,643 career games. … Trout was chosen 25th overall in the 2009 draft by the Angels.
Triple-A
IF Buddy Kennedy (Millville), 26, wrapped up his season with Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays). In 88 minor league games between the Bisons and Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies), he hit .288 (92 for 328) with 17 doubles, one triple, eight homers, 50 runs and 49 RBIs. … Kennedy started the year with the Philadelphia Phillies, elected for free agency after being designated for assignment in June and signed with the Blue Jays. He was designated for assignment by Toronto on Aug. 5 and claimed by the Dodgers on Aug. 15. The Dodgers DFA’d Kennedy on Aug. 28, and he signed a minor-league deal with Toronto in early September.
Kennedy was named the International League Player of the Month for May while playing for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs…. In 692 career minor league games, Kennedy is batting .283 with 141 doubles, 28 triples, 66 homers and 349 RBIs. … He was a lifetime .178 hitter with two homers in 67 major league games. … He was chosen in the fifth round of the 2017 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The season ended for RHP Chase Petty (Mainland Regional), 22, and the Louisville Bats (Cincinnati Reds). In 26 minor league starts, he went 6-13 with a 6.39 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 112 2/3 innings. … In three major league games (two starts) this year, Petty went 0-3 with a 19.50 ERA and seven strikeouts in six innings.
In 99 career minor league appearances (93 starts), Petty is 18-26 with a 4.23 ERA and 400 strikeouts in 421 innings. … He is the No. 7 prospect in the Reds organization according to MLB.com. … He was selected 26th overall by the Minnesota Twins in 2021.
Double-A
The season is over for SS Josh Hood (St. Augustine Prep), 25, and the Arkansas Travelers (Seattle Mariners). In 108 games, he hit .206 (79 for 384) with 16 doubles, 12 homers, 47 runs and 49 RBIs. He stole 18 bases on 23 attempts.
In 339 career minor league games, he is hitting .242 with 57 doubles, six triples, 40 homers, 179 RBIs and 59 stolen bases. Hood, from Vineland, was selected in the sixth round of the 2022 draft.
High-A
The season ended for LHP Noah Dean (Pinelands Regional), 24, and the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox). In 23 games (15 starts), he went 2-6 with a 5.45 ERA, 82 strikeouts and one save in 66 innings. Dean began the year as a starter but came out of the bullpen in eight of his last nine outings.
In 66 career games (47 starts), Dean is 6-18 with a 5.35 ERA, 284 strikeouts and two saves in 208 2/3 innings. He was chosen in the fifth round of the 2022 draft by Boston.
LHP Holden deJong (St. Augustine Prep), 21, signed with the Baltimore Orioles on July 25 and was assigned to Abderdeen IronBirds. On July 29, he was placed on the injured list for the rest of the season. He was chosen in the 11th round of this year’s draft.
The season is over for 3B Tony Santa Maria (ACIT), 23, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays). He had two stints on the injured list and missed more than 2 1/2 months due to injury. In 19 games with the Hot Rods and the Rookie League FCL Rays, he hit .277 (18 for 65) with seven doubles, two homers, seven runs and 12 RBIs.
Santa Maria, who played for Rutgers and is in his first year of professional baseball, was taken in the 19th round of the 2024 draft.
Single A
OF Trevor Cohen (Holy Spirit), 21, on Tuesday helped the San Jose Giants (San Francisco Giants) win the California League championship in a best-of-three series against the Inland Empire. He went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI in Game 1, a 7-3 win, and 2 for 4 with a run in a 4-2 victory in Game 2. … In 28 regular-season games, Cohen hit .327 (35 for 107) with 23 runs, three doubles, a triple, a homer, 15 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 10 chances. He had 20 walks and a .438 on-base percentage.
Cohen, who played for Rutgers, was selected in the third round by the Giants in last month’s draft. This is his first professional season. He is the No. 23 prospect in the Giants organization according to MLB.com.
The season ended for RHP David Hagaman (Holy Spirit), 22, and the Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks). He joined the Hops in a trade from the Texas Rangers on July 31. In 13 starts with the Hops and Texas’ Hickory Crawdads and ACL Rangers, he went 1-1 with a 2.98 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings.
Hagaman, who played for West Virginia, was selected by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2024 draft. This is his first professional season.
The season is over for OF Josiah Ragsdale (St. Augustine Prep), 21, with the Carolina Mudcats (Milwaukee Brewers). In 21 games, he batted .300 (21 for 70) with a double, 15 runs, six RBIs and 16 walks. He stole nine bases on 12 tries.
Ragsdale, who played for Boston College, was taken in the seventh round of this year’s MLB Draft. This is his first professional season.
The season ended for SS Ryan Weingartner (St. Augustine Prep), 21, and the Palm Beach Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals). In 21 games, he hit .145 (10 for 69) with a triple, seven runs, six RBIs, 18 walks and five stolen bases on nine chances.
Weingartner, who played for Penn State, was selected in the eighth round by the Cardinals in last month’s draft. This is his first professional season.
