Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says 'framework' for TikTok deal has been reached with China

The saga between the U.S. government and TikTok has been going on for years, but it looks like a resolution could finally be near. With a potential ban on the app still looming in America, the Treasury Secretary says that a “framework” for a deal with China is in place, and it could be finalized by the end of the week.

U.S. and Chinese officials were meeting in Spain when they came to terms on a deal that would keep TikTok available in the States, said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. However, the deal isn’t set in stone, and still needs to be agreed upon by two important parties: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. The two world leaders will meet on Friday to discuss the deal, and it could be finalized then.

The current sticking point with TikTok is that Trump wants creator ByteDance to sell the platform’s U.S. operations to an American company. It’s an issue that was also present during the Biden Administration, and one of Trump’s first orders of business after retaking office was to extend a deadline for the company’s sale. ByteDance has received subsequent extensions as it continues to search for a resolution.

TikTok (and a handful of other services and games) briefly went offline in America earlier this year before an extension brought it back online. A deal between America and China could ensure that doesn’t happen again.
