Mahomes and Kelce lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a 28-7 win over the Washington Commanders. Kelce ties Chiefs’ touchdown record and is praised: “That’s the true Chief of Chiefs, man.” Kelce could surpass the franchise TD record in their next game against the Buffalo Bills. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are now in their ninth year together with the Kansas City Chiefs. Over that span, these two superstars have firmly established themselves as one of the top duos in the NFL. Their three Super Bowl titles over the last seven seasons are a testament to this. Mahomes and Kelce were at it again on Monday, leading the Chiefs to an impressive 28-7 win over the Washington Commanders. Mahomes threw 25-of-34 passes for 299 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Kelce, on the other hand, registered six catches for a game-high 99 yards and one TD. Kelce made history with his lone score against the Commanders. It was his 83rd career touchdown, which saw him tie running back Priest Holmes for the most TDs in Chiefs franchise history. After the game, Mahomes had nothing but high praise for his teammate. The two-time All-Pro quarterback credited Kelce for being the heart and soul of the squad. “That’s the true Chief of Chiefs, man,” Mahomes said of Kelce. “… He’s the leader of this team. To be able to get him that record tying it, let’s go out there and break it now.” Kelce sat down with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt after Monday’s victory to discuss, among other things, his historic feat. Van Pelt also asked Kelce to comment on Mahomes’ bold declaration about Kelce’s status as the Chiefs’ unbridled leader. The 10-time Pro Bowl tight end was quick to play down Mahomes’ claim. “I’m just the old lucky dog to still be able to do this thing,” Kelce said. “I’m putting on the pads like I’m 15 years old again. I’m loving every single bit of it.” Kelce did not deny that he’s the leader and culture-setter of the team. However, he also refused to toot his own horn, so to speak. Kelce can even make more history in Kansas City’s next game. If he scores a touchdown, he will surpass Priest for the lone spot atop the franchise’s all-time touchdown list.
