The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions are set to begin a strike tomorrow, September 16, 2025, to protest the alleged sale of the CMB Lorry Station to private businessmen.
The unions contend that this takeover would severely disrupt their operations and negatively affect the livelihoods of their members.
During a press conference on Monday September 15, 2025, GPRTU spokesperson Abass Moro Ibrahim stated, “The CMB Lorry Park has served our nation for decades, facilitating transportation across all 16 regions. However, private developers have encroached on the park, significantly reducing our available space. They are now attempting to seize the remaining portion, and we implore the government to help us retain the lorry park.”
Mr. Ibrahim emphasised the station’s critical role in national transportation services, noting that the unions are deeply concerned about the economic impact on their businesses and the countless individuals who depend on the station for their livelihoods.
In response, the unions plan to submit a formal petition to President John Dramani Mahama, urging his immediate intervention.
Yaw Barimah, a spokesperson for the True Drivers Association, confirmed that no vehicles will operate from the CMB station until the petition is delivered to the president.
He asserted the union’s resolve to find a lasting solution and secure the station’s future.
In a show of solidarity, Diana Nyankopa Daniels, the Chairperson of the Containers Owners Association, expressed her organization’s readiness to support the transport operators in their efforts to petition the president regarding the CMB lorry park.
