Train heading for Midlands derails as major incident declared

A major incident was declared after a train derailed earlier this morning, sparking a 'do not attempt to travel' warning. An Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to London Euston was reported to have derailed at Shap in Cumbria at around 6.10am. Medics raced to the scene but Avanti said there had been 'no reported injuries at this stage'. This affects several services running through the Midlands, including the 9.45am Glasgow Central to London Euston train, which travels via Birmingham New Street. This service will now terminate at Motherwell. A spokesperson for Avanti West Coast stated that there would be 'significant disruption for days'. They said: "Our priority is the wellbeing of everyone who was onboard and getting them safely off the train. "We are assisting emergency services who are on the scene. "As a result, all lines are blocked north of Preston. Please do not attempt to travel north of Preston today. "We'll provide further information in due course, but it is likely there will be significant disruption to our network for a number of days." Avanti said tickets were being accepted on alternative routes between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh with LNR. ScotRail was accepting passengers between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central, and those travelling between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street could use CrossCountryUK.
