TRAI had previously recommended that CNAP be made available only to willing consumers, but the Department of Telecommunications believed that this service should be automatically provided to everyone to curb fraud and cybercrime. This facility is provided to special users, officials of central intelligence agencies, and important individuals. They display the caller’s name only as saved on their mobile phone. In many cases, users save a nickname or short name instead of the actual name of an acquaintance. Consequently, this name appears when calling. Even in cases of calls from unknown numbers, there’s no guarantee that the real name will be displayed. The person receiving the call will see the name stored in the app companies’ databases.
