British rock band Radiohead has revealed the real reason they stopped touring in 2018. As the iconic group prepare to tour next month for the first time in seven years, they agreed to one interview with The Times UK, in which they spoke candidly about their sudden hiatus. “I guess the wheels came off a bit, so we had to stop,” frontman Thom Yorke told the masthead. “There were a lot of elements. The shows felt great, but it was, like, let’s halt now before we walk off this cliff.” In the interview, Yorke revealed the personal heartbreak he suffered following the 2016 death of his first wife, Dr. Rachel Owen, was enough for him to hit pause. Physically,” he added. “The music hurts, because you’re going through trauma.” Guitarist Ed O’Brien, 57, also spoke openly about their seven-year break, admitting that at the time he was done being part of the group. “I was effectively over Radiohead,” he told The Times. “I enjoyed the gigs but hated the rest. We felt disconnected, f***ing spent.” But O’Brien said the break did them a world of good as they were able to reflect and eventually reconnect behind the scenes. And one of the things that was lovely coming out of it was realising how much I love these guys,” he said. “I met them when I was 17 and I’ve gone from thinking I can’t see myself doing it again to realising that, you know, we do have some stellar songs.” The band are due to make their long-awaited return to the stage next month with 20 scheduled shows across five European cities – Madrid, Bologna, London, Copenhagen and Berlin – starting on November 4. The band last toured in 2018 but will be back on stage next month for their first concert in seven years. Picture: AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite When they announced their comeback on Instagram last month, drummer Philip Selway revealed that they had been rehearsing behind the scenes just for fun, and realised they missed playing as a group. Radiohead’s last performance was in 2018 for the final show of their A Moon Shaped Pool world tour, which took place in Philadelphia. “Last year, we got together to rehearse, just for the hell of it,” Selway, 58, wrote. “After a seven year pause, it felt really good to play the songs again and reconnect with a musical identity that has become lodged deep inside all five of us.” Copied URL to clipboard Thom Yorke storms off stage in Melbourne The Radiohead frontman had an angry confrontation with a protester in... “It also made us want to play some shows together, so we hope you can make it to one of the upcoming dates. For now, it will just be these ones but who knows where this will all lead.” During their break, Yorke completed a solo tour in Australia late last year, playing two shows in Melbourne and two in Sydney – and it wasn’t without incident. Yorke was performing at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl in October, playing the Radiohead classic Karma Police, when he was interrupted by a heckler – a pro-Palestinian protester, according to eyewitness reports at the time. The iconic group first formed in 1985. Picture: Bob Berg/Getty Images Video of the incident shows Yorke pausing his song to listen to what the heckler had to say, before angrily responding. Right here,” he said. “Come up on the f***ing stage and say what you want to say. But don’t stand there like a coward, come here and say it. Come on.” “You want to piss on everybody’s night? Come on. OK, you do. See you later then,” Yorke said, removing his guitar and leaving the stage. He did, however, return to the stage a short time later and finished the song, which was his finale encore of the night.
