Two 13-year-old boys tragically lost their lives in a multi-car collision on southbound Interstate 25, a notorious stretch for severe accidents, in the Denver Tech Center area; Greenwood Village police confirmed the event took place on Thursday night between the Orchard Road and Arapahoe Road exits as reported by 9News. The crash, which unfolded around 6:52 p.m. and involved multiple vehicles, sadly resulted in the death of two male juveniles from Henderson and Commerce City while causing injuries to four others, as disclosed by the CBS News coverage. Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the accident, and preliminary findings indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the incident; however, further investigations are still underway, and the southbound lanes were subject to a lengthy closure for crash investigation and cleanup, including a hazmat situation due to a fuel leak from one of the vehicles as The Denver Post reported. According to Professor Steve Long, quoted in the 9News article, despite such high-visibility incidents, statistical data show that the Denver Tech Center segment of I-25 doesn't stand out for higher accident potential when compared to other metropolitan stretches, and the straight design of this highway section potentially contributes to driver distraction and higher speeds. CDOT data reveals a pattern of accidents with 180 crashes recorded in 2024, 346 in 2023, and 238 in 2022 on this two-to-three-mile stretch of I-25 known for bizarre occurrences, including a truck caught on a concrete barrier and a significant tanker fire in 2017. This latest devastating crash will undoubtedly re-ignite conversations around road safety in the area. South Metro Fire Rescue crews responded promptly to the crash, and an RTD bus route was disrupted due to debris on the tracks, necessitating shuttle buses to cover for the E-Line service, a service that was resumed on Friday morning, according to RTD.
