Traffic disruption as work begins on development for 2,000 new homes in Stafford

Temporary road works are taking place in Sandon Road to support the construction of a new secondary school as part of the development at Beaconside. The works are part of Bloor Homes’ new 2,000-home development at Sandon Park, north of Beaconside, which includes new primary and secondary schools, a retail development, as well as parkland, sports pitches, a health centre, and a retirement home. The roadworks, which will run until December 15, will see a one-way system from Beaconside to Hopton Lane, allowing traffic to travel in the direction of the A51. Bloor Homes, working together with Staffordshire and Stafford councils, intend to open the new secondary school in September 2028, and these current road works will install the necessary utility services needed for the development. The developer says the wider scheme will not only help Stafford Council meet its home building targets and infrastructure needs but will also provide £28 million worth of investment in community facilities. "Bloor Homes understands that there has been disruption in other parts of Stafford and will seek to work swiftly to minimise disruption," a spokesman for the company said. "Bloor Homes has worked in tandem with Staffordshire County Council and Stafford Borough Council to ensure the works can be done safely and speedily." Further roadworks to form the new site access junction will take place in Sandon Road during 2026. The site, about two miles north of Stafford town centre, covers an area of about 350 acres, mainly consisting of agricultural land. Outline consent was granted by Stafford Borough Council in January 2020, passing by just one vote at a planning committee meeting. The first phase of the development, on the eastern side of the site, will see the construction of 350 homes, 42 of which are deemed to be 'affordable'. The first phase will also see the creation of just under seven acres of public space, including a main public open space area to the west, a green corridor to the north, a pocket park, and a civic space.
