A 56-year-old British tourist has died in the Canary Islands after plunging nearly 20ft when the railing of a hotel 'gave way'. Another holidaymaker, aged 54, also fell and was left seriously injured in the same incident in the resort of Costa Teguise, Lanzarote early this morning. The 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was seriously injured and rushed to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where they remain in a critical condition. The incident is reported to have unfolded around 1.30am, when emergency services received reports that two people had fallen from a 'considerable height' inside a hotel. Members of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police and Spanish Civil Guard were sent to the scene, reports the Mirror . According to local reports, the railing that gave way was in an elevated area of the hotel complex. The Civil Guard has since opened an investigation, which will determine whether there was negligence in the maintenance of the railing or in the security of the hotel.
