Tottenham are interested in signing Real Sociedad star Brais Mendez in the January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new attacking midfielder goes on as the club prepares to compete hard on all four fronts this season.
The north Londoners were in the hunt for a new No.10 all summer after James Maddison suffered an ACL damage during the pre-season tour. The England international’s untimely and serious injury meant that the Hotspur Way chiefs were forced to sign a replacement quickly.
After missing out on several targets, Spurs managed to land Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. While the late arrival of Xavi has eased some of the creative burden, the club want to bring in another playmaker when the transfer window reopens in January.
Tottenham ready to make an offer for Brais Mendez
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are interested in signing Real Sociedad playmaker Brais Mendez. They are ready to make an offer of up to €40 million for the player.
Brais Mendez has been a class act for Real Sociedad ever since joining from Celta Vigo in 2022. The four-cap Spain international has found continuity and prominence at Real Sociedad, netting 28 goals and supplying 23 assists in 139 appearances to date. The 28-year-old has started the new season well with a goal and an assist in four La Liga fixtures.
The aforementioned report adds that Mendez currently is comfortable at San Sebastian but the appeal to play in the Premier League in his prime will be difficult for him to ignore. Real Sociedad are aware of the value the Spanish midfielder brings to the team, and his departure mid-season would pose a significant threat to their ambitions of qualifying for Europe. However, given the potential offer Spurs could table, they’d be ready to sanction a departure.
Mendez would be a shrewd addition to Thomas Frank’s ranks
Among the most underrated playmakers in Europe, Mendez could fulfil Tottenham’s eagerness to add a dynamic and energetic presence in the final third to ensure they remain competitive in the second half of the campaign. The Spaniard would be a smart fit in Frank’s system: creative, grafter, experienced and a leader. He is capable of slotting into a midfield three alongside Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur, or as an advanced playmaker flanked by Simons and Kudus.
For a player who has been consistently creating and scoring goals for Sociedad in the last three years, Tottenham spending around €40 million to get Mendez’s signature in January would represent a smart piece of business.
