Torrance couple welcomes rare identical triplets

TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Torrance couple expecting their first child ended up with the surprise of their lives at the doctor's office. They were expecting one heart beat - but instead heard three! Now that their daughters are here, guess what? They want even more kids! Identical triplets occur when an egg splits and then divides again around the same time. It can only happen naturally. "I had such a wonderful pregnancy, which is why it was an extra shock when they told me there were three babies," said mother Jocelyn Galvez. The news stunned the 27-year-old and dumbfounded her husband, Nicolas Jahn. "I stood up and walked around the room for a while, asked a lot of questions and I didn't a lot of answers that first day," he said. The two had no fertility treatments nor a family history of multiples. Yet, the couple drew the lucky number. "This is pretty rare, it only happens in about one in 100,000 deliveries," said Dr. Ilina Pluym, an OB/GYN with UCLA Health. She said multiple pregnancies can be very tricky. "Not only do you have complications that come from triplets, but you have a unique set of complications from them all sharing the same blood supply," Pluym said. Despite the challenges, Galvez sailed through her pregnancy and at 33 weeks on Sept. 25, her daughters arrived - Lilly, Sienna and Rose. "Delivery was like a clown car basically. Just pulled one out right after the other. They all came out crying. It was a really beautiful day," said Pluym. After a month in the NICU, reality set in. How much sleep do these new parents get? "Oh man. I'm lucky if I get three hours a night," said Jahn. The hungry sisters go through 24 bottles and 30 diaper changes a day. "It's nonstop. It's go, go, go all the time," he said. Each triplet has their own personality. While it's so difficult to tell these triplets apart - even for dad - Mom certainly knows the difference. "This is Lilly and this is how she is a lot of the time. And baby Rose, she's very calm and she doesn't cry as much. And Sienna is in between, but she's also our smallest baby," Galvez said. Triple work equals triple the love. That's why the couple would love to have another set of multiples! "Triplets are really hard. But twins? It's doable," she said. Every ounce of their energy goes into these girls right now, but Mom and Dad want them to know: "That we love them and we tried. And we're trying, and we'll never stop trying," said Jahn.
