Topsham Maine head-on crash kills 1, injures 2

Two vehicles crashed head-on late Saturday night on Route 196 in Topsham, Maine, killing one man and seriously injuring two other people.
The Topsham Police Department says it responded to the crash near the Merrymeeting Bridge around 10:38 p.m. and arrived to find a gray GMC pickup truck and a white Volvo SUV had collided, injuring three people.
First responders immediately began life-saving efforts on a 23-year-old passenger from one of the vehicles. He was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
The victim’s name has not been released out of respect for his family, according to police, who said the notification process is ongoing.
The drivers of both vehicles — a 34-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman — were taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, police added.
A preliminary investigation shows one vehicle crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic, resulting in the head-on collision.
Police haven’t said who hit who, or what caused the driver to travel into the opposite lane. It’s unclear if any charges will be filed.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are seeking additional witnesses or information, urging anyone with details to contact them at 207-725-4337.
