Top-ranked VIU Mariners women win PacWest soccer championship

The Vancouver Island University Mariners were the PacWest’s best team all season long, and extended that into the gold medal game today. The VIU Mariners shut out the Douglas Royals by a 2-0 score on Sunday, Oct. 26, in the Pacific Western Athletic Association championship match in Squamish. Jada Kamerman, VIU’s top scorer this season, scored both her team’s goals. She opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finding enough space to run through three opponents and score, then, after an opponent passed the ball right to her in the 34th minute, she took advantage and scored from almost the same place on the pitch. Kamerman was chosen tournament MVP, goalkeeper Kaiden Thorpe registered the clean sheet and was selected top goalkeeper, and Mary Nicholls was chosen top defender. The M’s women will get to go to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships in Red Deer, Alta., from Nov. 5-8. In other VIU soccer news, Kamerman was chosen the PacWest women’s soccer player of the year, Mary Huggill was chosen PacWest rookie of the year, and coach Bobbie Taylor was selected PacWest coach of the year for the fourth season in a row Kamerman, Huggill, Thorpe, Nicholls and Emma Thornton were chosen PacWest all-stars, as was VIU Mariners men’s soccer player Charlie Smith.
