​Top Kilkeel butcher judged to be a cut above in national awards

Named as the’ Best Small Butchers’ was McCartney’s in Moira, a family enterprise which has also won a prestigious Supreme Champion title in the UK Great Taste Awards for a stunning re-working of silverside roast beef. James Cunningham, owner and managing director of Cunningham’s, commenting to the prestigious award, says: “Northern Ireland truly has some of the best butchers across the UK, Ireland, and beyond — each offering something unique. We’ve always championed the importance of supporting local butcher: the closest farm-to-fork connection. “This award is a tribute to our incredible staff across all our stores. Their hard work, dedication, and passion — especially through the challenging years of Covid — have been nothing short of inspiring. This award belongs to our customers and community as much as it does to us. James, who runs the business with wife Donna and brother Christopher, continues: “We are humbled by every award we’ve won — and never take them for granted. To receive such positive feedback from the mystery shopper report makes this even more special.” Cunningham’s manufactures an extensive range of ready meals from ingredients supplied by other local suppliers. In addition, it operates an extensive deli with a comprehensive range of other local produce. Meat is sourced from the family farm in the picturesque Mourne Mountains. The family business is among the most successful in Northern Ireland’s and has won other major awards including the UK Deli of the Year. A membership-based organisation, members of the British Craft Butchers Association are artisans and skilled specialists, independent butchers, farm shops, and small abattoirs, as well as key suppliers to the industry.
