Urmila Matondkar needs no introduction. The actress is known for films like Aag, Ek Hasina Thi, Jaanam Samjha Karo and Khoobsurat, among others.
However, Urmila grabbed everyone’s attention in 2016 for her interfaith marriage with Mohsin Akhtar Mir.
Following her marriage, Urmila was brutally trolled for marrying a Muslim man. She and her husband, Mohsin, faced severe harassment online.
Rumors falsely claimed that Urmila Matondkar converted to Islam and changed her name to Mariyam Akhtar Mir after marrying Mohsin Akhtar Mir.
However, both Matondkar and her husband clarified that she didn’t convert. “My wife did not convert to Islam. Period,” he had said.
The harassment stopped to a new low when trolls infiltrated Matondkar’s Wikipedia page and changed her family details to fabricated Muslim names.
In one of her previous interviews, Urmila also slammed trolls for calling her husband a “terrorist” and a “Pakistani”.
“My husband is not only a Muslim but a Kashmiri Muslim. We both follow our religions in an equally staunch way,” she had said.
Even when Urmila entered politics, many social media users questioned her identity and political motives.
However, her husband came to her defense and stated, “One can go and see her profile on Instagram, she has not changed her name or added my surname”.
After eight years of their marriage, Urmila and Mohsin parted ways in 2024. The two filed for divorce and the reason behind their separation is not known as of now.
