Much remains the same, with a new member at No. 10, as many teams enter an idle week.
1. Grimsley (4-0, 1-0) Last week: No. 1
Coming off a bye, the Whirlies romped Metro 6A/7A Conference foe Southwest Guilford 65-0, with 37 points in the first quarter and 51 points by halftime with freshman Brody Lowe again filling in for Tennessee recruit Faizon Brandon at quarterback. The Cowboys were held to a mere 97 yards in the game. Grimsley coach Darryl Brown said on Monday that “Faizon is doing well but will not play this Friday” when asked about the star quarterback’s injury status relating to a thumb injury that has caused him to miss the Whirlies’ last three games. Next: vs. Western Guilford.
2. East Forsyth (3-2, 0-0) Last week: No. 2
The Eagles led 14-3 over a good Mooresville team, but costly penalties, special teams woes and third down conversions by the Blue Devils meant a frustrating night. East lost 42-14 but I don’t think anyone else’s performance was enough to cause a shift at the top, particularly with the Eagles handily beating Northern 33-10 on Aug. 29. Next: Idle, then at West Forsyth.
3. Northern Guilford (4-1, 0-0) Last week: No. 3
The Nighthawks raced to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, but allowed Oak Grove to come back for a 21-20 lead. But with clutch play, including a 4{sup}th{/sup}-and-14 conversion, Northern executed a late game-winning drive and showed it could pass the ball in big chunks, averaging 23.1 yards per completion throughout the game, including a 99-yard touchdown pass to Greyson Council. Next: Idle, then at Asheboro.
4. Reagan (4-1, 0-0) Last week: No. 4
After struggling offensively against Northern last week, the Raiders brought a balanced attack to Lake Norman, completing a season-high 62.5% of their passes — after entering the game throwing for 36.8% — and ran for an effective 237 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries in the 24-21 win over the Wildcats. Next: Idle, then vs. Northwest Guilford.
5. Page (3-1, 0-0) Last week: No. 5
Over the previous two games, Zamari Williamson was 2 of 7 passing for just 24 yards and no touchdowns with senior Anthony Johnson providing the bulk of the quarterback production, but on Friday, Williamson was in at quarterback for 10 of the team’s 11 drives and completed 13 of 22 passes for 213 yards, five touchdowns and one interception, while Johnson went 1 of 3 for nine yards on a non-scoring drive on Page’s first drive of the second quarter in the Pirates’ 47-0 win over Southern Guilford. Next: at Dudley.
6. West Forsyth (3-2, 0-0) Last week: No. 6
The Titans rushed for 300 yards and had 468 yards of total offense and led for much of the game until a late blocked punt went for a Richmond Senior touchdown. West lost 36-30, after leading 26-14. Next: Idle, then vs. East Forsyth.
7. Reidsville (3-2, 1-0) Last week: No. 7
The defense had four interceptions, two received by Dionte Neal, and forced five turnovers total in a crucial conference win over then-undefeated Walkertown to make the Rams the Mid-State 3A/4A/5A Conference frontrunner. Walkertown’s Jerrell Crawford doubled his interception total for the season during the eventual 44-28 loss to Reidsville. Next: at Carver.
8. Dudley (2-3, 1-0) Last week: No. 8
In the past two games, both wins, the Panthers have combined for 582 rushing yards. In their 34-18 win over Ragsdale, they had rushing season highs in attempts, yards and touchdowns with 44 carries for 369 yards and three scores. Junior running back Michael Boone Jr. exploded for his best individual rushing performance, with 25 carries for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Next: vs. Page.
9. Northeast Guilford (4-1, 0-0) Last week: No. 9
Without starting quarterback Jaquez Crawford, the Rams defeated Southern Durham 18-14. An upcoming bye week may be beneficial as conference play approaches. Next: Idle, then at Southern Guilford.
10. High Point Christian (4-0, 0-0) Last week: Not ranked.
The Cougars didn’t play last week. That might be the only way to stop the still-Triad leading rusher Jaylen Moore, who has gone for 872 yards and 11 touchdowns. HPCA is one of only four undefeated teams in the Triad, the others being Carver, Grimsley and Reynolds. Next: vs. Trinity Christian.
