The 2025-26 NBA season is just a day away, and there are so many riveting story lines heading into opening tip-off. The Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to cement themselves as the league's next dynasty after winning their first Larry O'Brien Trophy. Meanwhile, the Western Conference boasts three aging basketball icons — LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry — who continue to play significant roles on franchises with high aspirations. The Eastern Conference, on the other hand, feels as wide open as ever, with franchises like the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Orlando Magic hoping to finally return to the NBA Finals. Since we are just a day away, we at GIVEMESPORT are focusing on the one position, naming the ten best point guards in the NBA. For this ranking, we are evaluating these players based on their recent form as floor generals and projecting how they will perform this upcoming season. Therefore, players with season-ending injuries like Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, and Fred VanVleet were not up for eligibility. To be clear, if all three of these stars were healthy, only Haliburton would've made this list and come in at No. 5 overall. Anyway, here is our list of the top 10 best point guards heading into the 2025-26 NBA season. 10 Kyrie Irving Kyrie Irving is a challenging player to rank on this list for several reasons. Most importantly, the legendary combo guard is recovering from a torn ACL at age 33 and is not expected to return until around January 2026. In addition, Irving has thrived more as a shooting guard alongside an elite passer on the roster. At the moment, the Dallas Mavericks will largely rely on Kyrie to run the offense when he returns to action. Fortunately, the future Hall of Famer has returned from a devastating knee injury before, and he still deserves a spot in this ranking after averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists last season. 9 Tyrese Maxey Tyrese Maxey is coming off a trying season by his own standards. The Philadelphia 76ers' All-Star guard averaged a career high in points and steals, but was way less efficient while managing his own health setbacks. It was a disastrous season last year for the 76ers, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Still, there's plenty of talent on this roster, and Maxey is one of the best young floor generals in the league. At 24 years old, the dynamic guard should have his best basketball ahead of him. 8 Trae Young A few years after a stunning run to the Eastern Conference Finals, Trae Young was starting to garner a more negative reputation throughout the league. The four-time All-Star was beginning to be seen as a ball-dominant, volume-shooting player who didn't make his teammates better and was a very poor defender. While Young certainly needs to improve his efficiency to move up into this top 10, the Atlanta Hawks' franchise point guard led the league with 11.6 assists last season. And several players around him, like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels, were starting to blossom, dispelling the notion that "Ice Trae" is a toxic player to build around. The Atlanta Hawks are an intriguing team in the Eastern Conference this year, and this group's success revolves around their floor general, who is squarely in his prime. 7 Ja Morant Ja Morant is still just 26 years old, but the injuries are starting to take their toll on the Memphis Grizzlies' best player. The two-time All-Star experienced a dip in points, rebounds, assists, and efficiency, playing just 50 games last year. The Grizzlies had a tumultuous season that saw the franchise fire head coach Taylor Jenkins before the playoffs. Nonetheless, Morant is a phenomenal player with the upside to skyrocket up this list should he regain his past form. 6 Devin Booker Yes, Devin Booker is currently a point guard on the Phoenix Suns' roster. The longtime shooting guard has been taking on this new role several times in his career and actually averaged a career-high 7.1 assists last season. Unfortunately, Booker did also experience a dip in scoring and efficiency during an overall dismal year for his franchise. The Phoenix Suns are still a jumbled mess, but they do have one of the best guards in the league, who is still as loyal as ever. It's important to note that Booker would be higher on a list of the best shooting guards in the NBA than point guards. Playing the two is his more natural position. 5 Cade Cunningham Cade Cunningham had his breakout season last year and is now looking to take that good-to-great jump in 2025. The Detroit Pistons experienced a remarkable turnaround in 2024, improving from 14 to 44 wins to secure a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The then fourth-year point guard was named to his first All-Star Game, and his team fell in a thrilling six-game series to the New York Knicks. At 24 years old, Cunningham is one of a select few players with the potential to become the future face of the NBA. 4 Jalen Brunson The face of the New York Knicks comes in at No. 4 in our top 10. Jalen Brunson is already an iconic figure among New York sports fans, thanks to what he's accomplished for this beloved franchise. The Knicks have made the postseason three straight seasons since they added the former Dallas Mavericks guard. Brunson is now a superstar in this league and has saved his best form for the playoffs. New York made their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000 and is now squarely in championship-or-bust mode. Brunson's ability to control the pace of the game, create for others, and hit timely shots makes him an easy addition to this top 5. 3 Stephen Curry Stephen Curry comes in at No. 3 in our ranking. Even at 37 years old, the all-time great point guard is an indispensable player for the Golden State Warriors, who can still be the best player on a championship contender. Curry's numbers have experienced a slight dip over these past few seasons, but his efficiency and impact remain top-tier. Steph's willingness to move off the ball, as the greatest shooter of all time, continually makes life easier for the rest of this limited roster. The four-time champion's value was on full display in the 2025 postseason, where the Warriors beat the second-seeded Houston Rockets and won Game 1 of the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Unfortunately, Golden State's best player went down with a hamstring injury, and Steve Kerr's team was a subsequently a shell of itself, losing four straight games. The Warriors still need their aging superstar now more than ever. 2 Luka Doncic Luka Doncic is coming off one of the most consequential seasons of his career. A year after leading the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals, the Slovenian superstar was traded to the L.A. Lakers in a move that shocked the world. Alongside LeBron James, the five-time All-Star led this historic franchise up the Western Conference ladder to secure the No. 3 seed. Unfortunately, the Lakers were thoroughly dominated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. Luka now comes in with renewed ambition and presumably in the best shape of his life. There's a decent chance that the already legendary point guard collects his first MVP trophy this season. 1 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander No one else could've been No. 1 on this list. Aside from Stephen Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the only active point guard to be the best player on a championship-winning team. And the Oklahoma City Thunder's all-time great is squarely in his prime, unlike his Western Conference foe. In an era of restricted salary caps and parity, Shai led this organization to 68 wins and its first-ever championship. Gilgeous-Alexander won regular-season MVP and Finals MVP, leading the league in scoring and posting advanced statistics that rival those of Nikola Jokic. The 27-year-old is a true basketball savant and is trying to build the NBA's next dynasty with the Thunder. Right now, the defending champs are the clear-cut favorite to repeat this season, and it's largely due to their phenomenal floor general.
