Toni Collette gives cult leader vibes in Netflix's new series Wayward about a school for troubled teens

In recent years, Toni Collette has really found her niche with dark and disturbing thrillers (let’s not forget the movie Hereditary), and it looks like she has done it again with Netflix’s latest drama, Wayward.

Set in a scenic yet sleepy town of Tall Pines in Oregon, the eight-part piece dives deep into the lives of ‘troubled teens’ whose parents are at the end of their tether and faced with only one option…to send them to Wayward.

What at first may seem like a military style camp for children who step out of line soon becomes something far more sinister.

The two main teens at the centre of this ‘hell-hole’ are 16-year-old Abby and Leila, whose love of smoking pot has got way out of hand.

The correctional centre, run by Toni, who plays lead youth counsellor Evelyn, automatically gives the vibe of a cult-leader, who by all means necessary will change these teenagers’ ways. While her words are inviting and intriguing for parents, behind it all, she has other plans.

While the teenagers are trying to survive both physically and mentally, a new police officer in town begins to realise that all is not what it seems at Wayward.

Mae Martin, played by Alex Dempsey, moves to the Tall Pines, which just happens to be the place where her wife grew up and has a deep connection with the camp, which is soon exposed.

While battling her own demons, Mae, along with Abby and Leila, will stop at nothing to highlight the truth about what is really going on behind closed doors.

While the ‘torture’ methods used by the camp are disturbing, nothing compares to the eerie character of Evelyn – believe us when we say Toni is a far cry away from her character in Muriel’s Wedding- she, in fact, is sure to give you nightmares!

Wayward is set to land on September 25
