Tom Aspinall's dad issues worrying health update on UFC star after Cyril Gane eye poke

Tom Aspinall's father and coach, Andy, has revealed that his son is still struggling with vision in his right eye following a severe injury he suffered at the weekend. The reigning heavyweight champion put his his title on the line at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane. 'Bon Gamin' started the first round strongly, landing successful jabs and effectively fighting on the backfoot. However, towards the end of the round, the challenger accidentally poked the Brit in both eyes, leading to a temporary pause in the fight. Referee Jason Herzog gave Salford-born fighter Aspinall five minutes to recover, but concerns were raised when the UFC champion told the cage-side doctor and referee that his vision was compromised. Eventually, officials decided to call off the bout and declared it a no contest . Immediately after the fight, the heavyweight star was taken to hospital for further checks, according to All Out Fighting . After undergoing several examinations in Abu Dhabi, Aspinall returned to the UK for additional tests. Just days after UFC 321, Aspinall Sr has provided an update on his son's condition, reports the Mirror . In a recent video uploaded to Aspinall's YouTube channel, he said: "We got an appointment yesterday morning with a friend of ours, who is one of the doctors from the UFC. He got us a private appointment to see an eye specialist yesterday [Monday]. "He kind of basically did the same as the guy we saw over there [in the States]. He said, 'It's bad, it's not good'. But his eye is a little bit more closed than it was. "His right eye, he still can't see anything. He said it's just grey. They tested him on words, he just couldn't see anything. "His left eye is 50%. He went down about four letters and just couldn't see the letters. So one's really, really blurry. And the other, can't see anything." He added: "His vision in his eye that's the best eye, his eye wasn't following properly, so the muscles weren't working strong enough. We've got to have additional tests this week, and he's got a CT scan to see if the bone's alright. But they think the bone is alright." After the fight, several members of the Brit's team were left bewildered as to how the French challenger wasn't disqualified from the bout. In video footage that has emerged since the encounter, the heavyweight champion was subsequently shown a replay of the eye poke, with a member of Aspinall's corner asking: "How is he not disqualified off that?" to which the British fighter responded: "That is outrageous. He already got warned twice. "At least once for poking. Keep his fingers closed the ref said. He nearly poked me in the eye before. People start booing me like it's my fault. F****** double poked me in the eye. Trained for 14 months. Didn't want someone's finger knuckle deep in my eye." The next UFC bout is scheduled for Steve Garcia to face David Onama in Las Vegas on Saturday, 1 November. The preliminary fights are due to commence around 8pm UK time, while the main card gets underway at 11pm GMT. In the main event, Onama is expected to enter the octagon first at approximately 2am UK time on Sunday. Viewers in the United Kingdom can catch all the live coverage on TNT Sports.
