Speaking to Brendan O'Connor on RTE's Radio 1 this weekend, Ian Dempsey let slip an interesting fact about his start in radio and his school days. The Today FM star told Brendan about his Leaving Cert exams, and the fact that he has no clue what his results were. Recalling his school days, he shared that there were some subjects he was fond of while he struggled with others. Ian explained: "I liked meeting people. I liked some of the lessons. "I liked English, and I liked French. I hated Mathematics. Still do - don't know how to get my head around numbers at all. I'm terrible on that!" Ian then went on to admit a surprising fact about himself, as he shared he never actually got his Leaving Cert results. Admitting that he got lucky, he added that he wouldn't like any current Leaving cert students to take a leaf out of his book. "I did the Leaving Cert exams, but I actually... I don't know what I got in it! I never actually picked up my Leaving Cert results!" "I'm ashamed to say it - and I would hate anyone out there who's studying at the moment for state exams to follow my lead, because I was lucky and it worked out for me - but I didn't actually get my Leaving Cert." It turns out the reason that Ian never collected the results of his state exams is because he was already entering the broadcasting world, working at that time for a pirate station. What he wasn't expecting, however, was for Brendan and his team to have gotten their hands on his Leaving cert results from decades ago, and he was shocked when the host admitted he had them. Pressing brendan for details on his French results, Ian seemed tickled, but Brendan admitted that he wouldn't put the pressure on while they were live, saying: "We just decided it would be unfair to read them out on air. "We're going to give them to you in a sealed envelope afterwards," he joked: "I think maybe it'd be best if you were alone when you open it!" Leaving Cert results aside, Ian has boasted a fantastic career in broadcasting, and shared that he doesn't have any plans to give it up soon. Host of Today FM's Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, Ian is always jolly and upbeat when he comes on air in the early hours, something he says he loves. "I do jump out of the bed in the morning. I'm signed up with Today FM, with Bauer Media, until 2027. And sure, we'll see what happens there," he told Brendan. "I'm still enjoying doing it, and I get a buzz out of it. I get a buzz talking to people on the radio. I get a buzz talking about what we're going to talk to people on the radio about!" "And, I mean, it's become much more like a business, I think, you know, than it ever was. But at the same time, if you concentrate on the bits in between all the songs and all that and just try and entertain, that's what it's all about."
