As noted by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. said after his club’s dominant 41-20 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday that he and his teammates noticed ahead of kickoff that some Tennessee players looked like they didn’t “want to play” against the Colts.
During his Monday media availability, Titans head coach Brian Callahan responded to Pittman’s take.
Tennessee Titans “played hard” versus Indianapolis Colts despite final score
“When you win a game and you win it the way they did, you can kind of say whatever you want,” Callahan acknowledged, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “I think if you watch the way that the team played, that certainly wasn’t the case, by any stretch. We played hard, and we fought in that game. We didn’t play well enough to win it. But it certainly wasn’t — I don’t think that was an accurate depiction. But again, when you don’t win, that’s just the way it goes. You can say what you want.”
Angry Titans fans chanted “fire Callahan” as the team fell to 0-3 on what’s quickly becoming a season to forget for the organization. In the third quarter of Sunday’s game, Tennessee running back Tony Pollard seemed to keep the hosts in the contest when he found the end zone with roughly 20 minutes remaining in regulation. However, multiple Tennessee players then showed some questionable effort as Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor sprinted for a 46-yard score late in the quarter.
Could Brian Callahan make big change?
Callahan now has a 3-17 record as Titans head coach, so it makes sense that he admitted on Monday he could relinquish his offensive play-calling duties. According to ESPN stats, Tennessee began Monday ranked 31st in the league with an average of 222.3 offensive yards gained per game this season.
“Everything is under evaluation right now at 0-3, certainly it’s all part of it,” Callahan added during his comments, per Nick Suss of the Nashville Tennessean. “That’s players in their roles. That’s everything. We’ve got to find a way to put ourselves in position to win games. We’re evaluating everything.”
As of Monday afternoon, ESPN BET had the winless Titans as 6.5-point road underdogs for this coming Sunday’s game at the 0-3 Houston Texans. If Tennessee players make so-called “business decisions” during another loss, Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk could decide to blow things up before September comes to an end.
