Tips to save money on holiday travel

The holidays are coming fast, and it’s the perfect time to start planning your trips. Many people want to travel smart, meaning saving both money and time. There are several ways to stretch your vacation dollars. Dr. Darla Bishop, a travel expert, stopped by Live in the D, to share tips on ways to save on your next trip. “My #1 tip is to check a third-party site like Kayak or Google Flights. That way you can play with the times, even the airports, and see which is the best day and time to travel for your price and schedule,” Dr. Bishop said. However, she said when booking, always do so with the airlines directly. “If there’s any issue, you have a lot easier chance getting those resolved with the airline directly than if you book them through a third-party site like Expedia or Orbitz.” Another way to save costs on travel is through memberships like Costco, and AARP. “They have some of the most powerful discounts, 10%, 15%, 25% - and these really nice little perks. If I book a car rental through my Costco portal versus directly, I actually can get that free second driver. So, if my husband wants to drive, I don’t have to pay an extra fee for him.” Dr. Bishop said. She also advocates using credit card points sooner rather than later.
