Tinubu Urges Global Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

President Bola Tinubu has called for the complete eradication of nuclear weapons worldwide, emphasizing the urgent need for global peace and security. Speaking through Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, at a high-level UN meeting in New York on September 27, 2025, to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Tinubu stressed that only total elimination can prevent the catastrophic consequences of their use or accidental detonation. “Nigeria remains committed to achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world,” Tinubu declared, highlighting the dire humanitarian and environmental risks posed by nuclear arsenals. He expressed concern over the lack of political will among Nuclear-Weapon States to dismantle their stockpiles and urged them to act swiftly to meet global disarmament commitments. Tinubu called for universal adherence to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), emphasizing its three pillars: disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. He praised the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), noting Nigeria’s early support and urging non-signatory states to join promptly. He also highlighted Africa’s leadership through the Pelindaba Treaty, which establishes the continent as a nuclear-weapon-free zone, encouraging other regions to follow suit. Tinubu underscored the importance of nuclear energy for development in countries like Nigeria while stressing compliance with global safety and non-proliferation standards. “The benefits of nuclear disarmament are immense. We must stay focused on a world free of nuclear weapons to ensure humanity’s survival,” he concluded, calling for collective action and sincerity in pursuing global disarmament.
