Tim Curry Reveals Surprising Reason He Walked Out of a ‘Rocky Horror’ Screening

Tim Curry is arguably best known for his role as Dr. Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, though he revealed he once walked out of a screening of the 1975 cult classic after he was accused of being an “imposter.” In his new memoir, Vagabond, Curry, 79, recalled learning that a movie theater near his New York City apartment was hosting screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1976. “I was curious, however hesitant, about this new incarnation. I’d called a day ahead of time, to let them know that I was a member of the cast and to ask if they would be so kind as to reserve a few tickets for my friends and me,” he recalled in the book, adding that the woman he spoke to dismissed him as “the third Tim Curry to call today.” Curry was confused that no one believed him, so he decided to go to one of the screenings. However, the Home Alone 2 actor insisted he did not intend to draw attention to himself. “We went in and sat toward the back of the theater. I was far more interested in viewing the spectacle than in participating, and the crowd’s engagement was a true delight to behold,” he said. Members of the crowd eventually started to recognize Curry, and he quietly said hello to those who noticed him. However, he said that the woman from the ticket booth eventually approached him and accused him of being “an imposter.” The woman further proved she didn’t believe it was really Curry by asking him to leave. “‘You’re a nightmare! And you are not Tim Curry at all — you don’t even look like him!'” she told Curry. After the woman confronted him, he said he “stood up slowly and, with a mixture of embarrassment and triumph (neither of which were particularly founded), I handed her my passport.” Once the woman looked at his passport, her “haughty expression collapsed” when she realized her mistake and apologized. After he proved his identity, the woman asked Curry to stay for the remaineder of the screening. However, he revealed he had no intention of making her feel better. “I took my passport back and gestured to my friends. ‘I wouldn’t dream of it!’ I said, and promptly strode out of the cinema,'” he wrote in the memoir. According to the book’s synopsis, “Curry takes readers behind-the-scenes of his rise to fame from his early beginnings as a military brat to his formative years in boarding school and university, to the moment when he hit the stage for the first time.”
