The memory of longtime community advocate Jamie Bramburger will be honoured this fall with a charity hockey game at the Pembroke Memorial Centre.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., the Pembroke Lumber Kings Alumni will take on a team of Algonquin College teachers and staff in a special fundraising matchup. The Jamie Bramburger Fall Classic pays tribute to Bramburger, whose decades of work in sports, education, and community development left a lasting mark on the Ottawa Valley.

Bramburger was well known as the voice of the Pembroke Lumber Kings, spending years as the play-by-play announcer for the Junior A club. Beyond the rink, he was a fixture at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus, where he was the manager of Community and Student Affairs, helping to build strong ties between the college and the region. He was also deeply involved in charitable work, supporting causes that aimed to strengthen and uplift the community.

Barb Bramburger, Jamie’s wife, spoke during an event launch press conference held at the Pembroke Memorial Centre on Sept. 15.

“I’m thrilled about this, thrilled because Jamie gave so much to the community and I’m so pleased to see the community is giving back,” Barb said adding the event is extra special as it involves Algonquin College, the Pembroke Lumber Kings and their history, community, and sports – all things of great importance to Jamie.

Adding to the special October event will be former Boston Bruin (Jamie’s favourite NHL team) and Lumber Kings alumnus P.J. Stock who will suit up with the alumni squad, while retired Ottawa Senator Marc Methot will stand behind the bench of the Algonquin team.

Proceeds from the game will go to the Jamie Bramburger Memorial Fund and The Grind Pembroke. Both causes reflect Bramburger’s lifelong commitment to community by supporting students and education or by helping some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.

“So I think it’s going to be a very exciting day to be able to bring the community together in recognition of great causes and a great person,” said Jerry Novack, one of the organizing committee members.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, with free entry for children 12 and under. Tickets are available online at Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.ca/e/1702654999939) or in person from David Minns Desjardins Insurance in west-end Pembroke, McCarthy Fuels and Propane in Killaloe, and The Grind in Pembroke.

Novack added that organizers are still looking for community sponsors. If you’re interested in being a sponsor of the event you can contact the committee through any of the in-person ticket locations.
