Thunderbirds overpower Nile Rapids in Kabale 7s final

The Kabale 7s final came down to two sides that had so far met in two finals in the National 7s Series.

The Nile Rapids recovered from the first 2 circuits to win the Entebbe 7s by setting aside the Thunderbirds in sudden-death time, then putting up a spirited fight in the Kyabazinga 7s final, holding on to win the royal title.

On the other hand, the Thunderbirds had last claimed a circuit win at the Coronation 7s, but appeared in several finals, resulting in points accumulation.

It is this string of consisten performances that saw them head into the Kabale 7s as series leaders, on 96 points, 6 ahead of the Avengers who didn’t make it to the semifinals in Kabale.

Along the way, the Thunderbirds comfortably dispatched the Kigezi Queens by a 50-point margin, before receiving a tough contest from an understaffed Black Pearls on Day 1.

On Day 2, wins against the She Wolves and the Walukuba Titans sent them to the final.

In the final, the Thunderbirds made their intentions known through an Agnes Nakuya try, before Comfort Angayika added another. Neither try was converted.

The Nile Rapids responded with two tries of their own, with Shaine Babirye opening up the scoring.

A late try in the second half sealed the victory for the Thunderbirds, who now move to a comfortable 116 points ahead of the Buffaloes 7s.
