Three tomato sauce products urgently recalled over fears they may cause 'fatal' botulism

Customers have been warned that consuming specific jars of tomato sauce could be fatal. First and Last Bakery, LLC, located in Connecticut, issued an urgent recall for three of its popular tomato-based pasta sauces because of a risk of Clostridium botulinum, which can cause life-threatening food poisoning. No illnesses have so far been reported, but due to the extreme health risk of botulism, customers have been urged to return the product to the store for a full refund. The affected sauces are the 26-ounce jars of the First and Last Original Marinara Sauce Tomato & Basil, Meat Flavored Traditional Pasta Sauce, and Mildly Hot & Spicy Puttanesca Sauce. The products are reported to have been distributed between Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and potentially other retailers from September 22, 2025. All of the affected sauces feature a use by date of September 26. Botulism is caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which attack the nervous system and cause paralysis. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has said that the sauces were manufactured without an adequately evaluated production process to prevent the formation of the dangerous bacterium, according to the Independent. Clostridium botulinum bacteria can be formed when acidified or low-acid canned foods aren’t properly processed. The toxins are one of the most lethal substances known, according to World Health Organisation. The majority of people make a full recovery from botulism, however it is fatal in about five to 10 per cent of cases. It can take anywhere between a few hours and several days after Clostridium botulinum exposure for symptoms to develop. People may feel sick, vomit or have stomach cramps, diarrhoea or constipation. Without treatment, it can cause paralysis. Symptoms include drooping eyelids, blurred vision and slurred speech. The FDA recall affects shoppers in America, but recalls issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) often take place in the UK. In August, ASDA issued urgent recalls for several food products due to health risks. These included Baba’s Sweet and Spicy Sauce, Pieminister pies and Myprotein gooey filled cookies.
