The Wamfie District Magistrate Court in the Bono Region has remanded three men into police custody and granted bail to a minor for engaging in illegal mining activities. Presided over by His Worship Eugene Obeng Ntim, the court on Thursday, 23 October 2025, ordered that the three adult suspects, 30-year-old Moses Ayando, 32-year-old Joseph Akuwaaya, and 34-year-old John Akanboei, be kept in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations. A fourth suspect, identified as 16-year-old Kwaku Atingani, was granted bail in the sum of GHC 50,000 with one surety. The four were arrested on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, during a special anti-galamsey operation led by the Dormaa Paramount Chief’s Anti-Galamsey Task Force at Akontanim, near Wamfie. The team reportedly caught the suspects actively engaged in illegal mining at the site. They have been charged with mining without a license and are expected to reappear before the court on 4 November 2025. In a statement issued after the court proceedings, the Bono Regional Police Command cautioned individuals involved in illegal mining within the region to desist from the act or face the full rigours of the law. “The Police Command is warning all persons engaged in illegal mining activities to advise themselves or risk being arrested, investigated, and prosecuted,” said Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Public Relations Officer of the Bono Regional Police Command. The statement further reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to supporting traditional authorities and state agencies in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, which continues to threaten water bodies, farmlands, and the environment across the region.
