Three Men’s Basketball Players Permanently Suspended By NCAA Following Gambling Probe

In an effort to push out sports betting by coaches and student-athletes, the NCAA has issued a crackdown, and their most recent probe triggered three men’s basketball players from San Jose State and Fresno State to be permanently suspended for allegedly gambling on their games. The universities did not receive punishment.

An investigation by the NCAA discovered that Steven Vasquez and Mykell Robinson, who were Fresno State roommates in the 2023-24 campaign prior to Vasquez leaving for SJSU, had an operation together to manipulate contests for profit. The probe also found Jalen Weaver to be a participant. (RELATED: Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill Accused Of Domestic Violence By Estranged Wife: REPORT)

“In January 2025, Robinson and Vasquez — who was then competing for San Jose State — discussed over text message that Robinson planned to underperform in several statistical categories during one regular-season game,” per the findings from the NCAA.

“Robinson, Vasquez and a third party bet a combined $2,200 on Robinson for his under-line performance in those categories. As a result of Robinson’s underperformance, a $15,950 payout was redistributed among those who had bet.”

A Fresno State men’s basketball player manipulated his performance for gambling purposes and conspired with two players to place bets on his statistics, according to findings from an NCAA investigation released Wednesday. https://t.co/qyHrqB0nnq — ESPN (@espn) September 10, 2025

During his time at Fresno State, Robinson placed bets on daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests, with thirteen in particular being connected to his own statistics on over/under prop wagers.

Due to there being ties between the student-athletes, the NCAA discovered text messages that showed how they would gamble on contests, which led to more manipulation.

“Notably, Robinson placed multiple bets on Weaver — who was Robinson’s teammate at Fresno State — including two bets placed before a game in late December 2024 after he and Weaver exchanged information about their respective betting lines,” noted the NCAA.

“As a result of that coordination, Weaver also placed a $50 parlay bet for himself, Robinson and a third student-athlete, and he won $260.”
