Raghu Raghavan, professor De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom, speaking at the inauguration of ‘CONFLUENCE -2025’ said, in the era of fast-growing technology, the word sustainability is not just an option, but a necessity. “But this sustainable development cannot be achieved through policy formulation alone. It has to become a part of our lifestyle,” he said He was speaking at the international conference on the theme ‘Advancing Sustainability through Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation’, organised by G.M. University in Davangere on Thursday. Prof. Raghu Raghavn said that India’s ancient culture in its roots had principles of respect for the environment and natural life. “If we combine modern technology with Indian cultural values, we can give the world a model of sustainable development. Today’s India is further enriching its rich heritage through innovative innovations. This is not just technological progress. This is the way to cultural revival,” he said. T.V. Ramachandra from Center of Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Benglauru, said that the use of plastic was harmful to health and life and the root cause for many diseases. However, despite such being the case, plastic products were being used in one way or another in day to day. “By using plastic every day for food storage, water storage, and other purposes we are weakening our own health,” he said emphasising the need for abandoning plastic completely. Presiding over the inaugural ceremony, Vice-Chancellor of G.M. University S.R. Shankpal, referred to the exemplary works of people who had contributed a great deal to environment conservation and inspired many others to be part of the movement. “Nature is not just a resource, it is the existence of life. In today’s times, environmental protection is not just a campaign. It is a necessity of human life. It is the responsibility of every citizen to maintain green surroundings and conserve water,” he said. Pro Vice-Chancellor and chair of the conference, H.D. Maheshappa welcomed the gathering. Dean, Research and Innovation, and Co-Chair of the conference, K.N. Bharath briefed about the objectives of the conference. Chancellor of the university G.M. Lingaraju emphasised the need for imbibing the culture of environment protection among the students from early age. Registrar Sunil Kumar B.S. and others were present. Ljubica Velimirovic, professor of Geometry, faculty of Science and Mathematics, University of Nis, Serbia; Cornelia-Livia Bejan, professor of Mathematics, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Laci, Romania, are among the special resource persons at the conference. A large number of researchers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and academicians from across India and abroad are pariticipating in the international conference. The conference will deliberate upon sustainable innovations and development innovations at a global level. In all 340 best chosen research papers will be presented during the three-day conference.
