'This stunning venue faced closure – now it’s thriving,' Brierley Hill Civic boss says 10 years on from charity takeover

Since being handed over to the Dudley CVS charity in 2015, the Civic has undergone a series of major improvements with further investment plans under discussion.

Brierley Hill councillors Adam Davies and Wayne Little recently visited the venue to catchup with general manager James Challis and Dudley CVS’s Andy Gray, praising the hard work that has gone into turning the Civic back into a thriving community and entertainment hub.

With help from funding partners, upgrades at the Civic have included a better layout and complete refurbishment in the main bar, major audio/visual improvements, new toilet facilities, a new and VIP ensuite for performers, fresh decorating throughout, refurbished seating, and most recently a refurbishment of the temporary service areas.

James Challis, general manager at The Civic, said: “Not too long ago this stunning venue faced closure – now it’s thriving. Thanks to my fantastic Civic team, and with the support of Dudley CVS, our partners, and the community, we’ve transformed it into a vibrant space full of energy and life. The Civic has always belonged to its people, and we couldn’t be prouder to see it buzzing once again. There’s still much more to do, but we’re all excited for the future.”

The venue has a packed programme of events planned for the coming months. The line-up includes tribute acts to top stars, evenings of mediumship, comedy nights, daytime discos, bingo nights, musical theatre shows, Mowtown nights and more.

Cllr Davies said: “The Civic team have worked incredibly hard to create a welcoming, vibrant venue for visitors – showing just what can be achieved when passionate people run great venues like the Civic.”

He said discussions are currently being had about the neighbouring police station, which is joined to the Civic and which is earmarked for closure as part of cost-cutting plans.

Concerned about the future of the station building after the police move out, the councillors, council officers, Brierley Hill Community Forum and Andy Gray from Dudley CVS have been working together to explore future uses for the building alongside potential funding and business opportunities.

Cllr Davies added: “We’re incredibly frustrated and concerned the Police and Crime Commissioner is still saying he plans to close our police station – despite overwhelming opposition from local people – so we’re determined to do what we can to make sure the building is used positively for the benefit of the community.”

Cllr Little added: “The Civic is a vital part of Brierley Hill, and it’s fantastic to see the progress that’s been made in recent years. The improvements already carried out have made a real difference, and we hope the further ideas we’re exploring with Dudley CVS and other partners are a real opportunity to strengthen this community asset even more.”
