Every traveller knows the panic of reaching the airport on time. People stress over long traffic jams and the fear of missing their flight. But there is one town in California where that stress simply doesn’t exist. Here, reaching the airport means stepping out of your front door because the street itself is a runway. Yes, you read that right. A video that surfaced on Instagram introduced viewers to this unique neighbourhood called Cameron Airpark, where planes take the place of cars. It offered a fascinating look into how life works in a place built entirely around flying. A Runway Instead Of A Road The video begins with: “In this neighbourhood, instead of cars, aeroplanes are parked in front of houses and they’re not just for show.” The visuals show homes lined up with small aircraft parked in driveways. The streets themselves are wide enough for planes to taxi, and there is a runway that runs right through the middle of the neighbourhood. The clip adds, “Thanks to a runway running in the middle of the street, residents can actually take off and land right in front of their doorstep.” The details make it easy to see how different life is here. Traffic signs are placed lower than usual so they don’t interfere with aircraft wings, and the streets are broader than in regular residential areas. How It All Began Cameron Airpark was established in 1963 for retired military pilots in the US. Over the years, it evolved into a neighbourhood where both retired and active pilots decided to live. The most common reaction was about the noise. One user commented, “Must be the loudest neighbourhood ever,” while another wrote, “Imagine the noise. I could barely sleep being a mile away from an airport.” But there were also those who found the idea exciting. “There’s no car wash, there’s a plane wash,” a person joked. An individual said, “I wish I could live there,” while someone else imagined what mornings might sound like: “Plane engines for alarms! Great way to start the day.” Other Airparks In The US Cameron Airpark isn’t the only residential airpark in the US. Another well-known one is Spruce Creek in Florida, which is home to around 5,000 residents, 1,300 homes and 700 hangars. There are about 650 aircraft parked there. In total, US has around 426 residential airparks.
